Performance and composition practice
Following degrees in music at La Trobe University and ANU, Madeleine and Tim have developed an improvisational and through-composed practice in music/sound for theatre and movement/dance and installation. Madeleine trained initially as a pianist with a speciality in contemporary classical repertoire, and Tim trained as a jazz and classical trumpet player, and in electro-acoustic techniques. Their practice involves the consideration, performance and composition of sound in spatial and physical contexts. Their curiosity about how sound works in space and how humans respond to this has led them to develop works in sound and long-term collaborations concurrently with an academic research-based practice. Their practice includes composition/performance for dance, theatre, installation and documentary in Australia, France, Malaysia, Indonesia China and Japan. Their practice is eclectic, evolving and driven by curiosity, reflection and engagement with other practitioners and thinkers as well as the insights of audiences of all ages.
Madeleine and Tim are also developing a specialisation in articulating cross-cultural musical collaborations with an ongoing collaborative practice with internationally acclaimed butoh dancer, Tony Yap, in the tony yap company (tyc). www.tonyapdance.com
